We’re thrilled to release a brand-new Minor Chord Easy Jam Pack designed to give you a turn-key improvisation warm-up. Whether you teach band, orchestra, or modern band, this pack includes:
Printable note handouts tailored for each ensemble type focused on just the first five notes of the Dorian Scale
Background jam tracks in a variety of styles
A simple, student-friendly improvisation sequence
🎧 Band sheets are in C minor
🎻 Orchestra and modern band are in E minor
Why Dorian/Minor?
We picked Dorian mode because it:
Uses the same notes as commonly known major scales, making it familiar and accessible
Has a cool, modern sound that students naturally gravitate toward
Works beautifully for single-chord jam sessions, which are ideal for improvisation at any level
The Process (2–5 Minutes of Creative Warm-Up)
Here’s a quick, repeatable structure you can use with your students:
I play–you play rhythms on a single note
Students improvise rhythms on one note as a group
I play–you play on two notes
Students group improvise on two notes
Expand to all five notes, encourage experimentation.
Pro Tips for Success
🎧 Let them all play at once. Group improvisation may sound chaotic, but it gives every student a safe space to experiment without fear of being singled out.
💬 Stuck students? Encourage them to say a sentence and play the rhythm of that sentence.
🙋♂️ Solo moments can be powerful—but wait until students are ready. Volunteers only and Low stakes set the stage for students to improvise alone when they’re ready and not before.
🧭 Use our Music Theory Cheat Sheet to help students find additional notes if you want to scaffold up to more notes.
🎨 Most importantly, celebrate exploration. There are no wrong notes—just new ideas.
